Description
Pictured here is a typical dune at White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, with the San Andres mountains in the background. White Sands is uniquely white because the sand is made of gypsum, which is water soluble and thus usually drains to the ocean. Water here has no naturally drainage, so simply evaporates instead. The photo contains great detail in the dunes, not visible in the small thumbnails.
